Directives

The
Member States: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark,
Spain, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy,
Luxembourg, Norway, Netherlands, Portugal, United
Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic,
Slovakia and France have joined together in a
Committee for European Standardization.
The purpose of this Committee for European
Standardization is to remove the technical barriers
that exist between countries. The Committee
organises the standardization and free circulation
of equipment within the European Union by means of
European directives.
In the field of personal protection two directives
have been implemented in order to frame the rules
concerning worker health and safety:

EUROPEAN
DIRECTIVE 89/656/EEC - USE OF PERSONAL PROTECTION
EQUIPMENT
This specifies that the employer must:
Supply its employees with adequate personal
protection equipment suited to the risk in
question,
Check that the correct equipment has been
selected,
Check that this equipment is used
properly,
Ensure that the equipment is in
compliance,
Check that the equipment functions
correctly, or have it checked,
Make its employees aware of the risks they
are exposed to,
Inform and train its employees in accordance
with the instructions for use of the equipment.

PROTECTION
EQUIPMENT
This directive lays down :
The conditions for free circulation of
products and harmonises the legislation in the
Member States with respect to personal protection
equipment,
The basic safety requirements with which
personal protection equipment must comply in order
to protect workers' health and ensure their
safety,
The CE markings required (compulsory for all
personal protection equipment marketed in the
European Community).
